Art and antiquities
At Østergade 57 there is an unusual museum established by the silverware manufacturer Frederik Ernst. His father, Johan Emst, founded a silverware manufactory in 1890 that in the early 2Oth century grew to one of the largest in Denmark, producing several tonnes of silver cutlery a year.

Both industrialists collected old silver, although Frederik displayed an exceptional interest in antiques. He filled his flat with finds from at home and abroad, opened his home to the general p The factory. Porcelain had a special place in his heart and he collected quite a lot of East Indian porcelain, although a number of European manufactories are also represented. The exhibitions include items from Meissen, which are among the finest of the collection. The museum can only be visited in connection with a guided tour. These are held every Saturday at 14.00, from 1 May to 30 September, as well as daily from 15 June to 31 August. Or by appointment

Open-air museum
.The evocative open-air museum of 'Hjemstavnsgaarden" Gummerup near Glamsbjerg, is a complex of buildings from the 18th century. Here there is every opportunity of studying Funen half-timbering, including the famous pillar constructions, although the buildings are also full of interesting furniture and implements.
|

|
|
One of the areas the museum specialises in is grandfather clocks. The Wibye family of clockmakers used to live and work in Urmagerhuset a couple of centuries ago, where there is a fine exhibition of clockmaker implements. The buildings are surrounded by gardens and fields where old plants such as buckwheat, flax, mustard, fodder turnips and various types of corn are cultivated, with all the formerly so prevalent attacks of fungus, insect pests and weeds that are no longer seen in modern agriculture.
The museum is open 10- 16 daily except Mondays, from 1. May to 30 September as well as during the mid-term autumn holidays. Or by appointment, tel. +45 64 72 16 00.

The artist and the naval hero
The urban museum of Willemoesgården is housed in a couple of the most distinctive properties of the main thoroughfare. Here there are exhibitions of urban history and shipping, although we are most proud to be able to present two of the 19th century’s most famous Danes, both born on the premises. |

|
The naval hero Peter Willemoes was born here in 1783 in one of the town’s oldest houses, Østergade 36, which at the time was the residence of the royal district revenue office of Assens County. Peter was educated at the naval college and, at the age of 18, made a name for himself during the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. Seven years later, he fell at the Battle of Zealand point.
Both naval battles are commemorated by exhibitions that include, among other things, wreckage from the warship Prince Christian Frederik. The artist Dankvart Dreyer was born at 0stergade 38 in 1816, which at the time was the residence of one of the town's richest merchants. Dankvart was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and he painted some of the best landscapes of the period now known as the Golden Age. The art section of this house comprises two rooms with works by Dankvart Dreyer as well as nine other rooms with works by his contemporary, the sculptor J. A. Jerichau, his wife Elisabeth JerichauBaumann, Thorvald Niss, Lauritz Mikkelsen, etc.The museum is open 10- 16 daily, except Mondays, from 1 May to 30 September as well as during the Easter and mid-term autumn holidays. 1. October to 30. April open Wednesday and Saturday 10-16.
